Northeast Philadelphia Elementary School’s All-Female Rocketry Team Prepare for Nation’s Premiere Rocketry Contest

Monday, February 27th

Our Lady of Calvary Elementary School (http://www.olcalvaryschool.org/)in Northeast Philadelphia has a group of young ladies named the, “Soaring Six.” This group is comprised of eighth grade girls who are now preparing for the nation’s premiere rocketry contest, the Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC). The competition is expected to feature more than 800 teams of secondary school students from across the country, all vying for 100 coveted spots in the TARC National Finals which will occur in May. The objectives for the contest are to build an egg-lofting rocket capable of hitting 775 feet for a flight duration of 41-43 seconds. So far, the rockets built by this team have yielded flight results that are bulls-eye with these parameters.

These six young ladies started building rockets in sixth grade, entered their first official state competition in seventh grade (took First Place by beating out over twenty high school teams). The “soaring six” prepares for their challenges in the school’s own dedicated, spacious, fully-technologically equipped Rocket Lab!
