Wednesday, May 20th

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s Office of Catholic Education announces that Mrs. Debra Brillante has been named the Superintendent of Elementary Schools effective immediately. For the past six months she served in that position on an interim basis. Mrs. Brillante was chosen to lead the Archdiocese’s 122 elementary schools through an extensive search process led by Educational Strategies, a firm that specializes in Catholic Education, out of Baltimore.

Mr. Christopher Mominey, Chief Operating Officer and Secretary for Catholic Education said, “It’s my great joy to announce the appointment of Mrs. Debra Brillante as the Superintendent of Elementary Schools for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. I have had the distinct pleasure of working with Debbie both in the Diocese of Syracuse as well as here in Philadelphia and I can attest to the dedication and enthusiasm she has shown for the students and faculty of our 122 elementary schools. Over the past six months Debbie has demonstrated that her style, approach, and personal commitment to our mission in Catholic education are a perfect match for us as an organization at this critically important time.  Although our search process led to us reviewing candidates from across the nation, in the end Debbie proved to be the exact fit for us.”

A native of Syracuse, New York, Mrs. Brillante, 60, brings to her role, nearly 25 years of experience in Catholic elementary education. Early in her career she was a Pre-School Teacher at Northminster Nursery School in North Syracuse, New York. From 1991-2001 she taught grades two, three, and five at Saint John the Baptist Academy in Syracuse, New York. She became the first lay administrator at Saint Mary’s Academy in Baldwinsville, New York, when she was named principal in 2001, a position which she held until 2010. Prior to being named as the Interim Superintendent of Elementary Schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia last November, Mrs. Brillante was the Assistant Superintendent for Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Syracuse from 2010 to October of 2014.

Mrs. Brillante holds a Certificate of Advanced Study in Educational Leadership from LeMoyne College in Syracuse as well as a Master of Science Degree in Elementary Education from the State University of New York at Oswego and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with Concentrations in Elementary Education and Special Education from the State University of New York at Potsdam.
